Markthal in Rotterdam, Netherlands
My friend and travel companion, Laura, read about the Markthal that opened in November 2014 in an architectural magazine and since we were in the Netherlands over the Holidays, we decided to take a day trip to this lovely food hall. It was an absolute feast for the senses with International foods, flowers, restaurants, colorful wall paintings and the hustle and bustle of locals and tourists.
I have been to other food halls in cities like Philadelphia and Stuttgart and the concept is the same with all kinds of fresh and international foods on display under one roof. What makes Rotterdam so interesting is that this roof is decorated with a cornucopia of food and flowers. I read somewhere that it was like the "Sistine Chapel" of Rotterdam and it was quite amazing. The neat part is that there are actually about 200 apartments hiding behind the huge grapes on the ceiling and the apartment windows look into the Markthal.
The dimensions of this hall are just gigantic and I had a hard time capturing a photo of my mom and Laura outside because it is such a large structure.
The food stands and restaurants range from Vietnamese, to Belgian chocolates, to Stroopfwafel stands, to Turkish to Chinese. You can find it all here under one roof and the hardest part will be picking what and where to eat.
We drove into Rotterdam and there was ample parking on the many levels below in the garage. The Markhthal was also featured on Travel and Leisure's list of places to visit in 2015 so you have to check it out when in this Dutch port city. You probably will need all day too because there are just so many choices. Bon Appetit!
